About Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is a regional affiliate currently serving NC, SC, WV, and parts of VA. We currently operate 14 health centers and see over 35,000 patients annually. Planned Parenthood is the nation's number one trusted health care provider of reproductive health care, and in fact, 1 in 5 women will visit Planned Parenthood in her lifetime.
For more than 35 years, Planned Parenthood has been serving the residents of Asheville with compassionate, nonjudgmental care including preventive services like birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and sexual health education. Your unrestricted operating support gives us the power to provide quality, affordable health care to more than 2,600 patients each year; strengthen our community education programs; and advocate for the right of every individual to exercise reproductive freedom.
Our heath center in Asheville currently receives Title X funding from the federal government. Title X funding allows us to provide family planning, STI diagnosis and treatment, and wellness exams either on a sliding scale or for free to those without insurance or who fall below the poverty line. Over 60% of our patients in WNC are un-insured, about 3% have Medicaid, and the remaining use insurance. Other funding includes donations from private individuals and grants from various foundations.
Sadly, we are preparing to be de-funded. Defunding could mean the following-
preparing for the loss of Title X- federally funded monies allocated for people without insurance or who live below the poverty line.
As a part of Title X, we receive price breaks on birth control and pharmaceuticals that we pass along to patients.
We expect that we no longer will be reimbursed for Medicaid patients-every health care provider who sees a Medicaid patient is reimbursed-doctor's offices, health department, etc...and because we are a health care provider we are also reimbursed for Medicaid patients.
Here is where we are-
We are 100% committed to securing Planned Parenthood's role in providing care
We're committed to defending Abortion & birth control access and are working with the national office to protect these rights.
PP is very popular. Even 40% of Trump voters support Planned Parenthood and our federal funding.
Defunding will affect various PP Affiliates differently, we may look different but we will survive. We've been here for 100 years and we'll be here for another 100. Our concern is that millions of patients will lose their chosen provider, and this is truly tragic.
We've seen a 900% increase (nationally) in IUD appointments since the election. Women are scared about losing their birth control options.
Calling All Artists
This is a group exhibition that serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman, in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and abortion rights. It also serves as a fundraiser to support organizations defending these rights and to be a platform for organization.
About the Project
The Nasty Woman project was started by Roxanne Jackson and Jessamyn Fiore, right after the election, with a facebook post that read:
Hello female artists/curators! Lets organize a NASTY WOMEN group show!!! Who's interested???
The massive response transformed into building an ever-expanding network of Nasty Women Artists & Art Organizers that will culminate in multiple exhibitions.
For Asheville's 3rd Nasty Women Exhibition in Asheville, we are asking for artists across the country to ship or deliver 1 piece, no larger than 18"x18", to Trackside Studios, that will be sold for $1-200 with all proceeds supporting Planned Parenthood. We also ask that you SHARE ,SHARE, SHARE, and spread the word!!
Who do we want involved?
Artists of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, gender or non-gender identifications, economic backgrounds, immigrants and non-immigrants…
EVERY ONE OF YOU, LET’S DO THIS!!!
